Seriously Good Eats East

The Greater East Side is a mecca for hole in the wall places and higher end places with amazingly unique food! From eateries with recipes passed down for generations to courageous start ups from the younger set with seriously good culinary ideas, these neighborhoods are drawing attention from food lovers throughout the world.

Al & Bea’s
Established in 1966, Al & Bea’s is legend. Boyle Heights
would not be Boyle Heights without the walk up window
and the handful of picnic tables that are occupied non-stop
all day long. The combination burrito with simmering shredded beef, warm, liquid refried beans and cheddar cheese is almost a delicacy, and the simple, all-weather bean and cheese is a staple that brings entire familias back from the Chicano ‘burbs of Montebello, Hacienda Heights and Diamond Bar to join the legion of die-hard aficionados who cram the humble eatery day in and day out for a classic, old-school burrito fix.

Caramba
A family-owned restaurant, Caramba has a salsa you can’t beat. The grilled chicken salad is a favorite for healthy fair, but the albondiga soup and he cross-section of burritos and a mouthwatering carne asada plate are enough to get you back through the door to this cozy, velvet painting lined classic in our personal East Side Mexican food hall of fame. 3020 W. El Gallo Grill
Jesus Huerta and the owners of Moles La Tia along with El Gallo Bakery have finally reopened  their previously popular lunch and dinner flagship destination in the Maravilla merchants district. With a menu built around flame-broiled servings of savory steak, chicken and seafood, they bring you closer to the true Mexican smokehouse flavors more common in the northern regions of the country. These delights are a far cry above the oversimplified and bland fajita plates we have been accustomed to. The grilled Mahi-mahi is a great place to start. and the agua de epino along with full beer and wine selection make it a must.

El Sinaloense
Don Ramón Soria serves up the best chicken fajitas east of Boyle. The Molcajete a la Mexicana is our new all-time favorite, but you can’t go wrong with the marinated chicken or carne asada alambre, rice and beans! Ramon’s kitchen is still a little known secret outside of certain circles but neighborhood fans are onto a good thing. This might be due to the fact they also deliver on foot and by car to local patrons.
